Optimal Moments for Abandoned Cart Pop-Ups
Pop-ups are most effective when triggered at key points during the customer journey:
- When a customer seems likely to leave the product page after adding an item to their cart.
- When a customer is about to exit the shopping cart page without proceeding to checkout.
- When a customer revisits your store after leaving without checking out.
Enabling Pop-Ups for Abandoned Cart Recovery
SmartPush offers a rich library of pop-up templates for abandoned cart recovery. To activate one, follow the general steps below:
- In SmartPush, go to Popups & Forms > Template Library.
- In the left column of filters, choose Abandoned checkout retention under Theme.
- Select a desired template.
- Making your edits in the editor. Learn more about customization in the next section.
- Once you finish customization, click Save & Exit to save your edits. Click Activate to enable the popup.
Customizing Pop-Ups

When a Customer is About to Leave the Product Page
With the power of AI, the system can predict when a customer is likely to leave a product page without proceeding to the shopping cart and display a pop-up to retain them. To incentivize customers and create a sense of urgency, you can choose a template countdown timers or discount codes. Recommended customizations are as follows:
- In the Push tab:
- Push time: Select Click Add to cart.
- Show page: Select the pages for pop-up display from the drop-down menu, such as product details pages and product collection pages. Do not select the shopping cart and checkout page.
- Display rules: Select the customer behavior on page based on which you’d like to display the pop-up. Choose Exit intention to let the system do the work for you.
- Stop-push condition: To avoid disturbing customer experience, choose the condition based on which pop-ups will not appear (customer action or counts of appearance).
When a Customer is About to Leave the Shopping Cart Page
With the power of AI, the system can detect when a customer is about to abandon the cart and display a pop-up to retain them. Now, in addition to countdown timer and discount code, you can showcase recommended products in the pop-up to encourage checkout or upsell additional items. Recommended customizations are as follows:
- In the Push tab:
- Push time: Select User enters page.
- Show page: Select Shopping cart from the drop-down menu.
- Display rules: Select the customer behavior on page based on which you’d like to display the pop-up. Choose Exit intention to let the system do the work for you.
- Stop-push condition: To avoid disturbing customer experience, choose the condition based on which pop-ups will not appear (customer action or counts of appearance).
- In the Add blocks tab:
- On the left pane, drag and drop the Products component to your desired position on the pop-up. Then on the right pane,

- Product source: Choose Related products for added cart products. The system will automatically pick recommended products for customers and order them by relevance. The component can hold up to 4 recommendations.
- Button link: choose Click Add to cart. Clicking the recommended products will add them to cart and take customers back to the shopping cart page.
- Style tab: customize the look and feel of the component to match your brand identity, such as product title, price, and CTA buttons.

- Stop-push condition: To avoid disturbing customer experience, choose the condition based on which pop-ups will not appear (customer action or counts of appearance).
